Nationalism And Patiotism
Nationalism and Patriotism: What's the Difference?
Nationalism and patriotism both show how a person feels about their country. People often mix them up and think they're the same, but they're definitely not.
Nationalism is when someone puts their country's culture, including language and history, first. Patriotism is when you love your country, focusing more on its values and what it believes in.
George Orwell, a famous writer, said something interesting about this. He thought nationalism was really bad for peace because it means thinking your country is better than all others in every way. Patriotism, according to him, is just liking the way your country does things. So, patriotism is kind of chill, but nationalism can get pretty intense.
Patriotism is all about loving your country and thinking it's great because of its values, but you also think other countries are cool too. Nationalism is more about competing with other countries and not liking them as much.
Nationalists often think their country is the best, but patriots love their country and also see how it can get better. Patriots like making friends with people from other countries, but nationalists might not want to.
With patriotism, everyone in the world is seen as equal. But nationalism says only people from your own country are. Patriots are okay with hearing criticism because they can learn from it. Nationalists get really upset by criticism, taking it as an insult.
Nationalism is all about thinking your country is perfect and not seeing its flaws. It can also make someone look down on other countries. But patriotism is more about doing what's right for your country and being loyal.
Nationalism tries to make excuses for any mistakes the country has made in the past. Patriotism helps people see both the good and the bad in their country, and how it can improve.

2. What do nationalists usually think about their own country?
3. What do patriots think about their country?
4. Between patriotism and nationalism, which one sees all people around the world as equal?
5. Which one do you think is better, nationalism or patriotism? Why do you think so?
