French In Vietnam

French in Vietnam

The French came to Vietnam and changed many things. They built schools and taught some kids French and Vietnamese. They even made a big school called the University of Hanoi. But, mostly kids in cities got to learn, not the kids in the countryside. The French also changed how the cities looked, and sometimes they knocked down old, special buildings.

The French leaders didn’t have a big plan for Vietnam, they just wanted to stay in control and make money. Different leaders came and went, and they all did things their own way. This made it easy for some to be unfair or mean.

The biggest reason the French were in Vietnam was to make money. They took over farms and made Vietnamese people work for them, growing things like rice and rubber to sell. The French also made the people pay lots of taxes, which was hard for them.

Dutch Colonial Era

A long time ago, the Dutch controlled places where spices grow, like some islands. They made the people there grow spices and food and were very strict. If the people didn’t do what the Dutch wanted, they could be treated very badly.

Some people did try to fight against the Dutch, especially on the island of Java. But the Dutch made sure they kept control so they could keep getting spices to sell in Europe. The Dutch made a lot of money, but they also spent a lot trying to keep control of the islands. Eventually, the Dutch East India Company ran out of money.

Later, the government of Holland took over. They made a new rule that people had to grow certain crops for them or work on government farms. This made Holland a lot of money, but it was hard on the people living on the islands. They sometimes didn’t have enough food because they were growing crops to sell instead of to eat.

The Dutch also built things like roads, bridges, and ports, and improved water systems. This helped the islands a bit, and after they became independent, these things helped the islands grow.
