Chapter 23: The Rise Of Fascism And Totalitarian States -Introduction

Long ago, there was a big fight called World War I. After the fight, some people were not happy, especially in a place called Germany. They were sad because of a rule called the Treaty of Versailles. It made things hard for them.

Later, something called the Great Depression happened. It was a time when many people did not have much money or jobs. This made people more sad and worried.

Because of all this sadness and worry, some people wanted leaders who could make things better quickly. These leaders promised to bring order, make things good again, and work for a better future. But, they wanted to be in charge of everything, like bosses who make all the rules. This is called a dictatorship.

People wanted to feel safe and have good lives, so some thought these bosses were okay if they could make things better. This happened in places like Germany, Italy, and a few other countries.

Even though people wanted freedom, they also wanted to make sure they could have food and a nice place to live. So, they were willing to have these bossy leaders if it meant they could have a better life.
